Maru
Sponsor an animal: Koalas
born Jan 2004, female

(the aboriginal word for Koala is written as Karbor but pronounced ‘Koobaroo’). She was born on Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia and later removed as part of a state-run program to manage the overcrowded population. Maru acquired Koobaroo in 2007 and we hope to breed from her in the future. ‘Koobs’ as she is affectionately known by the staff, sustained minor radiant heat damage in the fire that devastated the main Maru buildings in January 2009, but has recovered well.

Amber is one of the koalas that has come from the Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary in Barwon Heads, Victoria. She is a very quiet and gentle lady who enjoys interacting with her keepers. Whilst Amber’s exact birth date is not known, she is at least ten years old and as such is in her ‘old age’. Despite this she is very fit and active, and weighs a healthy 7 kilograms.

Bonnie is another koala from the Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary in Barwon Heads, Victoria. She is very large for a female, weighing up at 10kg and is very confident and dominant when dealing with the other koalas in her enclosure. In 2008 she carried the joey ‘Jade’. Jade was weaned off her mother in January 2009 and can now be seen in the park. Jade was Bonnie’s first joey at Maru, but we are hopeful that she will soon have more.

Estimated to be born in 2000, male

Sully is also from the Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary in Barwon Heads, Victoria. He has matured into a very keen and active koala and is our breeding male. He weighs in at around 10kg and he is the father of ‘Jade’ born at Maru in 2007. We hope he will father more koala joeys in the future with our females. He is usually housed separately from the other koalas and only allowed in with the female koalas to mate and breed. In the company of other male koalas he is very dominant and proudly protects his territory.

Born Jan 2008, female

Jade is the latest Koala joey to be born at Maru. Her mother is Bonnie and father, Sully. She has been conditioned to human handling to reduce any stress she might experience during health assessments. She enjoys interaction with her keeper and will willingly seek attention and ‘cuddles’ from people.
